ISLAMABAD: Two passport officials allegedly involved in corruption in visa extension for the foreigners were arrested Sunday on the orders of Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

The Ministry of Interior received a complaint that money was allegedly extorted from a foreigner by the officials of Karachi passport office for granting him extension in his visa.

Chaudhry Nisar Ali took serious notice of the complaint and ordered the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to arrest the two accused officials that also include assistant director of the office. The minister directed the FIA to not only recover the money that was extorted but also broaden the scope of the inquiry so as to identify other accomplices.

The minister has also ordered withdrawal of certain powers from the Passport and Immigration Department that allowed them to grant extension in visas to the foreigners for a certain period. Henceforth, all visa extension cases would be decided by the Ministry of Interior.
