Rapist sentenced to 10 years in prison
Lawyers stage token strike against inadequate wages of
prosecution dept employees of subordinate courts
A local court awarded a 10-year prison term to a convicted rapist on Thursday. Additional District & Sessions Judge (East) Zabiha Khattak said in her verdict that the accused Rehan was found guilty of raping a young girl in 2012.
The court observed that Rehan had visited the house of the complainant Sania Khan on December 12, 2012 in a locality of Korangi Town.
In order to trap Sania’s daughter Sakina, the accused visited the house with his sister Sidra and later asked her to leave. After the sister left the house, he produced a sharp-edged weapon to threaten Sakina with dire consequences and then subjected her to rape.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs50,000 and declared that in case of defaulting on payment, the convict would have to face another term of six months in prison.
After examining the evidence against the accused and hearing the arguments of District Public Prosecutor (East) Javed Akhtar and his team, the court announced a 10-year sentence for Rehman.
Token strike
Lawyers of the city held a token strike for two hours against the inadequate wages of employees of the prosecution departments of subordinate courts of all five districts, mostly located in the City Courts building.
The protesters gathered on MA Jinnah Road and demanded that the Sindh prosecutor general take up their issues and resolve them.
They said the employees were receiving inadequate monthly salaries and no allowances had been announced for them in a long while.
They demanded that the government take up the matter and resolve it without further delay. They said they would continue to observe a strike on a daily basis if the matter was not resolved soon.
Many lawyers of the Karachi Bar Association also announced their support to the plea of the protesters as regards increasing monthly salaries.
17-year jail
An ATC awarded 17 years’ imprisonment each to Muqrib Khan and Munawar for possessing explosive material.
The convicts were arrested in 2016 after a police encounter in the Manghopir police limits.
