Police kill suspect in ‘retaliatory’ gunfire in Sohrab Goth
Personnel of the Intelligence Wing of Sindh’s Counter-Terrorism Department have arrested three men allegedly involved in target killings as well as confiscated a huge cache of weapons.
Intelligence Wing chief SSP Omer Shahid Hamid told a media briefing at his office on Saturday that during investigations into presence of terrorists and terrorism cases, an informant tipped them off that activists of a political party were planning to create unrest in Karachi and were also moving a huge cache of weapons.
Following the tip-off, the law enforcers carried out a raid in Malir Town’s Jafar-e-Tayyar Cooperative Housing Society, but the police team was met with armed resistance.
After a brief exchange of fire, three men identified as Anwaar Hussain alias Waqas, Asif Mumtaz alias Mir and Khurram Sheheryar alias Lamba were arrested and taken to the wing’s headquarters for interrogation.
SSP Hamid said that during a search of their hideout, the police team confiscated three bags carrying a huge cache of weapons, which included six Kalashnikovs, a light machine gun, six repeater rifles, five TT pistols, two 7mm rifles and a large number of bullets.
During interrogation, the accused were found to be involved in target killings, including the murders of Irfan Haider and Jameel Ahmed in Saudabad and Abdul Hafeez in Malir City police precincts. Further investigations are under way.
Police kill suspect
Sohrab Goth police gunned down an allegedly wanted man during an encounter in the wee hours of Saturday.
The law enforcers said they were carrying out snap checking in the Chutta Gabol locality falling under the jurisdiction of Sohrab Goth police.
During the checking, the deputed officials gestured an approaching motorbike to stop for identification, but the two riders opened fire at the picket.
The policemen retaliated against the attack, which resulted in one of the suspects escaping and the other dying on the spot.
The deceased was later identified from his identity card as Zar Zanan. Police also confiscated a 30 bore pistol found on the dead suspect and impounded his motorcycle that carried no registration number plate.
The accused was said to be wanted by Sachal police in FIR No 75/2011 under sections 324, 353, 392 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code and FIR No 76/2011 under section 13D. Further investigations are under way.
