The trend of building housing societies in major cities of Punjab is increasing. A large number of such societies – Wapda Town, DC Colony, Garden Town DHA, Fazia Housing Society – are being planned in Gujranwala alone. DC Colony consists of 1,100 acres of land. This trend is dangerous because it wastes valuable agricultural land. The land in the Gujranwala district is famous for producing the best rice in South Asia. This means a profitable resource is being misused in a developing country like Pakistan.
Moreover, these housing societies are intensifying the class distinctions in the country. Since educated and wealthy people are moving into these societies and getting better amenities, they are no longer concerned about the provision of these services outside their circles. This reduces the pressure on the government which is responsible for providing these services and facilities to all its citizens. Like all the other developed countries, Pakistan should also focus on vertical expansion, not on the horizontal one.
