A country in fear

By our correspondents
February 21, 2017

A horrible wave of terrorism has hit Pakistan once again. The most recent terrorist attacks portray the country’s poor security system. Hundreds of people have lost their lives in the blasts. According to some media reports, facilitators of the Lahore blast and the Peshawar attack have been arrested. These terrorists came from Afghanistan and belonged to a terrorist group – the Jamaatul Ahrar.

The Pakistan Army took immediate action and killed a hundred terrorists in retaliation. However, there is more to be done to avoid such attacks in the future. The country has to provide fool proof security at shrines. The Sehwan blast also uncovered the heartrending fact that the country doesn’t have enough hospitals. The ‘nearest’ hospital from the shrine is in Hyderabad. This shows the incompetency of the Sindh government. This should be considered as a wake-up call for the authorities to begin development work in the region. The government should continue operations against terrorist organisations until terrorism is completely eradicated from the country.

After the recent wave of terrorism, fear and uncertainty have crept into the minds of the people. More than a hundred people have lost their precious lives when several terrorist attacks were carried out in the last week. This has confirmed one thing: The scourge of terrorism is not properly wiped out from the country. The tall claims of ‘breaking the backbone’ of terrorism now seem hollow.

It is pitiful that the government instead of carrying out constructive action only condemns such blasts. In the same way, another routine procedure is to blame other countries for our failure. The implementation and reinvigoration of so-called NAP failed to put an end to subversive terrorist activities across the country. The need of the hour is a strict operation across the country against all militant groups and banned outfits otherwise the country will continue to bleed.

After the recent series of terrorist attacks, the daily lives of the people have been affected. Tranquillity in the country has been engulfed under the thick blanket of fear. The motive behind destructive and deleterious attacks in heavily crowded areas is to hinder the development and economic growth of the country.

Despite the ongoing war on terror, the government still cannot manage to stop such subversive attacks designed to destabilise the nation. It is time the government took serious action against militant groups and their facilitators.
