LAHORE: Having had major stakes in one of the best-selling internationally food processing brands, the Heinz Tomato Ketchup, the 71-year old sitting American Secretary of State John Kerry and his 76-year old wife Teresa Heinz Kerry were one of the biggest power couples on the New York Wall Street till February 2013.
On February 14, 2013, the 145-year old Messrs Heinz Company had agreed to be purchased by top American tycoon Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Capital for $23.3 billion. Including debt assumption, the transaction was actually valued at $28 billion. According to Heinz, the deal was the largest in US food industry history at least. The acquisition was completed in June 2013.
According to Britain’s “Daily Mail,” Berkshire Hathaway was the investment firm that had bought another food giant Messrs Burger King in 2010.The “Daily Mail” had revealed in its February 14, 2013 edition: “Heinz shareholders will receive $72.50 in cash for each share of common stock they own. According to website “Open Secrets,” last year then-Senator Kerry disclosed slightly over $3 million worth of HJ Heinz Co. shares.”
Another US media outlet, “Business Insider” had calculated that due to increase in share prices, Mr and Mrs Kerry’s stake in the Heinz Company was hovering around the $4,029,123 mark by February 13, 2013, assuming they had not sold any shares since Kerry’s 2011 assets disclosure statement.
As Senator in 2010, Kerry had disclosed his 2011 assets, which included a valuation of $3,000,003 worth of HJ Heinz Co.His minimum net worth was $188.6 million at the end of 2009, up by more than $20 million from 2008, according to his financial disclosure form.
It is imperative to note that by 2012, more than 650 million bottles of Heinz Tomato Ketchup were sold every year in over 200 countries, the company had claimed on its website. According to the July 9, 2013 report of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, the 2012 Net Income of Heinz Tomato Ketchup Company had rested at $923 million, its 2013 assets were evaluated at $12.939 billion, its 2012 Operating Income had stood at $1.45 billion and its 2012 revenues were calculated at $11.64 billion.
John Kerry’s Mozambican–born American businesswoman spouse and philanthropist of Portuguese descent, Teresa Heinz, was the heiress to the Heinz ketchup fortune after the accidental demise of her husband and former US Senator John Heinz in an April 1991 helicopter crash. Kerry had married Teresa Heinz on May 26, 1995.
In 1963, she had graduated from the School of Translation and Interpretation at the University of Geneva and moved to the United States to be an interpreter at the United Nations.Involved with environmental issues and having served on numerous boards, Teresa has been awarded 12 honorary degrees by numerous top universities within the country and abroad.
