LAHORE: Wazir Ali of Gymkhana was in charge of the 18 holes of the All Pakistan Quaid-e-Azam Golf Championship at the Lahore Gymkhana course here on Saturday.

In the gross section, Wazir was outstanding and by virtue of an under par gross score of 71, he holds the top position on the leaderboard. He reflected confidence, control and composure in his shot-making off the tees and this he supplemented with some graceful chips which fetched him four birdies and eleven pars.

At the end of the day, the amateur competitors in the Championship were at their golfing best and out of 104 participants, at least 20 aspirants produced rounds of quality and can be considered strong contenders for honours.

The closest challenger for Wazir was Robin Bagh of Mianwali Golf Club and Ahmed Baig of Garrison who trail him by three strokes. These notable golfers managed a decent score of gross 74, two over par and are bunched together at this score. The three-stroke arrears are likely to bother them in the final round, but they can reduce the gap with profound focus.  Other hopefuls who have scored well in the gross section are Jamal Nasir (Defence Raya), Nadeem Aslam (Garrison) and Nadeem Aslam (Garrison). These three came up with the score of 75.

The race for net honours tilts in favour of Isfandyar Khan of Defence Raya as he played an amazing golf, compiling pars in regular succession. His round of net 67 reflects adept golfing and a champions’ touch of control and accuracy. Another golfer who scored net 67 is Jamal Nasir, also of Defence Raya Golf Club.
