Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah will inaugurate another 100mgd water pumping station at the Dhabeji pumping complex today.

Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) Managing Director Misbahuddin Farid while speaking to The News said the efforts were being made by the CM to overcome the city’s acute water shortage.

Considering the city’s geographical as well as population expansion over the year, the crisis has more or less become an annual event for the past over half a decade now.

Urban planners and concerned stakeholders have for years called for the crisis to be resolved by redistributing the water supply in the city on equal grounds.

To add insult to injury, operation of illegal water hydrants by mafias has also gone unchecked by government authorities.

The Supreme Court while hearing a petition on the water crisis, on September 8, this year, had categorically asked the KWSB to close down all illegal hydrants, and issue fresh tenders for hydrants operating in areas affected by water scarcity.

Hearing applications against illegal hydrants and the prevalent water shortage in the city, Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali had directed the water utility to propose names of experts who could suggest measures that could ensure all parts of the city received equal water supply.

The CJ had observed that issues of water shortage, environmental pollution and solid waste management were the least addressed by concerned authorities, as none of them even seemed interested in resolving the issues.
