Known businessman dies under mysterious circumstances

KARACHI: A known businessman Javaid Khanani also allegedly involved in money laundering cases died under mysterious circumstances in the Bahadurabad area on Sunday.

The incident took place on Sunday afternoon in the Mohammed Ali Society, Bahadurabad police remit. Police said that Javaid Khanani died after falling from an under-construction building, Saima Towers, in the Mohammad Ali Society.

As per the initial information, he fell down from the eighth floor once he was alone and on a routine visit. During the fall, he got entangled in electric wires and then hit the ground. His co-partners were at a nearby office at the time. Khanani was taken to the Liaquat National hospital by one of his co-partners.

His family reached the hospital but took the body home immediately without any police and medico legal action. Police have approached the family for legal action. So far the family is not willing, claiming it either a suicide or an accident.

They added that from the spot a few labourers had been taken to the police station for interrogation. No CCTV footage was received. However, they were checking for its availability while no eye-witness had been accessible. The police shall investigate the death of Javaid Khanani from all aspects. Further investigations are underway. Meanwhile, according to family circles, the funeral prayers of Javed Khanani will be offered at the Baitul Salam Masjid.  

News Desk adds: Javed Khanani, a director of Khanani and Kalia International (KKI) money-changers, and Munaf Kalia were arrested by the FIA in November 2008 for transferring money out of the country through illegal hundi channels. Javed Khanani was charged again in January 2015 by the FIA in a fresh hawala transaction. Javed's brother, Altaf Khanani, was arrested in September last year in the US on money laundering charges.
