This refers to the article, ‘The rights of women’ (29 Nov) by Malik Muhammad Ashraf. The writer highlighted the government’s efforts for the rights of women and to end violence against them. Some of the steps taken by the government includes the distribution of laptops among women in education institutions, launch of vocational training programs and reserving more seats in higher education. The government has increased the number of seats for women in the National Assembly. Most recently, the government has also passed the Anti-Rape Bill 2016.
Despite all the rules and laws; honour killing, rape and subsequent murder are among common crimes. There is a dire need to have a strict implementation of these laws. The social attitude regarding women ought to be changed.
