Robbers kill shopkeeper

LAHORE

A 42-year-old man was shot dead by two robbers in the Nishtar Colony area on Sunday.

Victim Shafiqul Hassan, a resident of Green Cap Housing Society, was closing his paint shop on Ferozpur Road when two robbers took him hostage at gunpoint. He offered resistance to foil the robbery bid, upon which, the robbers shot at and wounded him and fled the scene. He was removed to hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. 

Police have removed the body to morgue and registered a case on the complaint of victim’s brother Muhammad Shakeel.

Pickup kills child: A child was killed while two others sustained injuries when a speeding pickup hit them and fell into a canal in Kahna area on Sunday.

Three children were playing on the banks of the canal near Chetowali Stop, Kahna, when a rashly-driven pickup hit them and fell into a canal. As a result, one of the the children, Abu Bakr, died on the spot while the other two, Irfan, 10 and Qasim, 7, sustained injuries. Police have impounded the vehicle and registered a case against the driver who was at large.

PHP arrest nine POs: Punjab Highway Patrol (PHP) claimed to have arrested 20 criminals, including nine proclaimed offenders (POs). 

PHP arrested nine POs, identified as Abid Hussain, Abdul Rasheed, Ghulam Murtaza, M Khan, Sajid Shah, M Afzal, Sajid Hussain, M Younis and M Ibrahim.  PHP arrested 11 accused named M Nazim, Salamat Ali, M Javed, Munir Ahmad, Irfan, M Naeem, M Tariq, Idrees, Khalil Ahmad, Bilal and Sajid Ali and seized 87 litre liquor, 330 gram charas, two pistols and nine bullets from their possession.

Meanwhile, PHP also rendered help to 628 travellers.

Man found dead: A man was found dead in the area of Data Darbar police on Sunday.  Police claimed that the man, yet to be identified, was an addict and said he might have died of an overdose of drugs. The body has been removed to body.

Two robber gangs busted: Factory Area police claimed to have arrested five members of two gangs of robbers and recovered loot from the them. The alleged robbers were identified as Asif, Umair, Gulfam, Shahzad and Allah Ditta. Police recovered nine bikes from them. Illegal weapons were also seized from them.

seminar: A seminar on public procurement was organised by Punjab Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) at 90-Sharah-e-Quaid-e-Azam. All provincial secretaries, commissioners, heads of attached departments, autonomous bodies and chief-executives of public sectors companies participated in the event.

Chairing the seminar, Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Saeed highlighted the importance of training as well as capacity-building of government officials in public procurement. The aim of the seminar was to create awareness of principles of public procurement and fundamental procedures in top-level government officials. Ali Bahadur Qazi, PPRA managing director, reiterated the importance of public procurement as a tool for good governance and better service delivery. The Planning and Development Department chairman stressed on establishment of procurement and project management cells in various government departments. Eminent experts and speakers on public procurement delivered lectures, including Syed Mohsin Abbas, legal expert, Dr Adnan Qadir Khan, CERP from the UK, Atta-ur-Rehman, PITB and PPRA panel of experts.
