Professor Muhammad Tahir, General Secretary of Punjab Blind Professors and Lecturers Association (PBPLA), has appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for grant of special teaching allowance to disabled persons working in Punjab Higher Education department at par with federal and Punjab special education departments.

While drawing the attention of the chief minister towards grievances of blind professors and lecturers, Professor Tahir, who is also blind and teaching in Asghar Mall College, Rawalpindi, said that all of employees of Punjab special education department and even the employees of federal special education department were drawing exclusively an additional allowance along with other common allowances, equal to their running basic pays.

He further said that in federal and provincial departments the normal employees who have absolutely no disability are also entitled for the additional allowances. He said that such allowances should be granted to disabled employees in government services, particularly, in education department as the strength of these employees is very limited across Punjab.

He said that being disabled persons these teachers are facing residential problems. He pleaded that they should be provided official residences on priority basis. He further requested chief minister Punjab to extend the facility of pay protection as special case to only those professors and lecturers of Higher Education department who were selected by PPSC on contract basis and who were regularised in previous years.

While drawing attention towards another problem of disabled persons, professor Tahir said that in the month of July, Punjab government through a notification granted special conveyance allowance to those disabled employees who were either selected under the quota reserved for disabled candidates or who were disabled during service. He requested to grant this allowance to those disabled employees as well who were selected on open merit.
