KARACHI: Seamer Mohammad Abbas picked 14 wickets in the match to enable Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) to pull off their second triumph when they overwhelmed Karachi Whites by 149 runs on the third day of their Pool B four-day fixture of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2016-17 here at National Stadium on Monday.
The 26-year-old Sialkot boy, who had taken 6-47 in the first innings, produced his career-best figures of 8-46 in 22.3 overs to bowl out Karachi Whites for 156 in the second innings after they had resumed at 30 without loss while chasing a stiff target of 306 on a lively pitch.
The victory moved KRL to top in their group with 21 points after three appearances.
“The pitch was assisting fast bowlers and I benefited from it,” Abbas told ‘The News’.
“So far I have taken 29 wickets in the season and am determined to top the bowling chart,” Abbas said.
Dashing Shahzaib Hassan top-scored with 63-ball 52, hitting nine fours. Ahmed Iqbal (22) and Faraz Ali (20) were the other notable contributors.
Left-arm spinner Nayyer Abbas, who did not bowl in the first innings, took 2-49.
KRL scored 145 and 237. Karachi Whites were skittled out for only 77 in their first innings. The loss left Karachi Whites at nine points.
In a Pool A meeting, at Arbab Niaz Stadium, Peshawar, UBL engineered a nine-wicket triumph against Peshawar — their first win. This took the bankers (15 points) to the second spot in the group behind leaders WAPDA (18 points).
UBL chased 101 runs target in the 20th over with hard-hitting Sharjeel Khan blasting 68-ball 82 not out. The left-hander smacked seven fours and six sixes.
Rookie fast bowler Sameen Gul played a key role in UBL’s triumph as he produced 5-40, for an 8-83 match-haul as Peshawar were bundled out for only 109 in their second innings after gaining nine runs lead.
Mehran Ibrahim (33) and Ashfaq Ahmed (26) resisted to some extent.
In response to Peshawar’s first innings total of 311, UBL resumed their innings at 260-8 and were bowled out for 320.
Karamat Ali (48) and Sadaif Mehdi (35) scored 46 for the ninth wicket. Pacemen Taj Wali (3-82) and Nasir Ahmed (3-99) bowled well.
Here at the UBL Sports Complex, Ramiz Aziz (119*) hit his fifth first class century as HBL declared their first innings at 420-9 after resuming at 255-5 in response to Karachi Blues’ 157. Ramiz, who hit 11 fours and three sixes, was backed by Abdur Rehman (20) and Yamin Ahmadzai (30*).
After conceding 263 runs lead, Karachi Blues were 125-1 in their second innings at stumps. Haris Ali was at the crease on 41. Fazal Subhan fell after making 41 in which he hit seven fours. Karachi Blues still need 138 to avert an innings defeat.
At Jinnah Stadium, Sialkot, FATA set 345 runs target for PIA when they posted 342 all out in their second innings.
PIA were gasping at 33-3 in their second innings at close.
Mohammad Naeem hit a fine 96 for FATA with 15 fours. He added 83 for the third wicket with Khushdil Shah (40). Asif Ali belted 40.
Paceman Ali Imran Pasha grabbed 4-61, for 7-108 match figures. Off-spinner Tahir Khan got 3-97, for 6-192 match tally.
At Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, international Mohammad Rizwan (167) and Test stumper Adnan Akmal (107) shared 126 for the sixth wicket as SNGPL gained 178 runs lead when they declared their first innings at 545-9 in response to Karachi Whites’ total of 367.
Rizwan, also a wicket-keeper, hit 25 fours and one six in his sixth first-class century. Adnan smacked 15 fours in a-run-a-ball feat.
Qaiser Ashraf and Nasir Ali claimed three wickets each.
Lahore Whites were 39 without loss in their second innings when bails were drawn.
At LCCA Ground, SSGC secured 157 runs lead when they were bowled out for 423 after resuming their first innings at 184-3 in reply to Lahore Blues’ 266 all out.
Experienced Asif Zakir (128) and skipper Shoaib Malik (74) added 115 for the fifth wicket. Asif hit ten fours in the 17th century of his career. Malik smashed eight fours and a six from 85 balls. Saad Nasim and Haider Ali claimed three wickets each. Lahore Blues were 67-2 in their second innings at close.
At Diamond Club Ground, Islamabad, Test pacer Sohail Tanvir claimed 6-58 as Rawalpindi secured 13 runs lead. After scoring 266 they dismissed NBP for 253 in their first innings. The bankers had resumed at 224-6.
Naved Yasin struck 62 with seven fours. Faizan Khan made 43 with five fours.
Rawalpindi were 197-7 in their second innings at stumps.
Skipper Sohail was batting on 40 in which he had hit six fours and a six. Mohammad Irfan Junior picked 4-61.
