300 graduates awarded degrees at 17th Convocation of College of Home Economics
PESHAWAR: As many as 300 graduates were awarded BSc and MSc degree on Monday at the 17th Convocation of the College of Home Economics, University of Peshawar (UoP).
Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Higher Education and Information Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani was the chief guest on the occasion. He conferred degrees and medals on the students. Six students were also given gold medals for their brilliant performance
UoP Vice-Chancellor Dr Rasul Jan, Dean Faculty of Management and Information Sciences Dr Bushra Hameed and College of Home Economics Principal Dr Syeda Kaniz Fatima Haider were also present.
The six graduates who won the gold medals included: Tehiyat Fatima, Laloona Jalwa, Ayesha, Sidra, Nayyar Noor and Gulsanga.Speaking on the occasion, Mushtaq Ghani said promotion of education, especially among women, was the top priority of the government. “More universities and colleges are being established to provide education opportunities to girls,” he added.
He said that best teaching faculty at the College of Home Economics had made it one of the excelling institutions in the country, enabling girl students to meet challenges. Dr Rasul Jan said that the college had been offering the best home economics education for 54 years. He added the institution imparted specialised knowledge in the field of interior design, textile design, small business management, teaching, and research to young women.
Dr Rasul Jan said that UoP had opened new disciplines as per demand of the job market and in the recent years the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies, Department of Regional Studies have been made operational.
He added admissions to the Department of Criminology and Forensic Sciences have started this year, which would lead to production of skilled graduate of the field. He announced the establishment of department of parliamentary studies in varsity, which would provide hands-on training to the legislators and politicians.
Presenting the annual report of the college, Dr Kaniz Fatima said that Home Economics College was offering degrees in five disciplines with special emphasis on entrepreneurship development. She added that the college had 1,500 students, 80 faculty members and was offering PhD degree programme as well.
