Those involved in irregularities to face action: CEC

ISLAMABAD: The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Justice (retd) Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan, on Wednesday said action would be taken against those involved in irregularities in the local government (LG) elections.
He issued directives for addressing the shortcomings in the second phase of local government (LG) elections in the Punjab and Sindh. He was chairing a meeting here at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to review the first phase of elections held in the two provinces and the strategy to overcome any shortcomings and problems in the second phase.
According to an ECP spokesman, ECP Secretary Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad apprised him about the achievements and difficulties faced in the first phase of LG polls, printing of ballot papers, transportation of election material for the first phase and status of preparations for the second phase.
The additional secretary (Training) informed the meeting about the training conducted so far which would continue in the second and third phases of LG polls as well.
Provincial election commissioners of the Punjab and Sindh highlighted the hurdles faced during the first phase and recommended appropriate suggestions to overcome the same during the second and third phases.
The meeting was also informed about the upgrading of electoral rolls and 8300 SMS for voters facilitation. The chief election commissioner and ECP members expressed satisfaction over the conduct of the first phase of LG polls with slight reservations.The meeting was attended by ECP members, provincial election commissioners of the Punjab and Sindh and senior ECP officers.
