38 students get laptops under Prime Minister’s scheme

Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design (PIFD) distributed 38 laptops among students under phase-2 of Prime Minister Laptop Scheme on Tuesday. 

Punjab Population Welfare, Environment Protection and Higher Education Minister Begum Zakiya Shahnawaz was the chief guest. Nazir Hussain, Regional Centre HEC, Director General, Prof Hina Tayyaba, Vice Chancellor, PIFD, Prof Shaista Vine, Registrar PIFD, Attitque Ahmed, Director Administration PIFD, senior faculty members and students were present. 

Previously, 143 students were awarded laptops under Chief Minister E-Youth initiative in 2013 and 148 students were awarded laptops under Prime Minister Laptop Scheme in 2014, and now there are 78 students belonging to different departments who have qualified for award of laptops under Prime Minister Laptop Scheme, out of which 38 students are being awarded laptops in this phase. 

Nazir Husain, while introducing the laptop scheme, said,” Knowledge of economy is very necessary for the development of any country. The prime minister’s initiative for distributing laptop is the right idea of the PM to give students access to technology and internet so that they can learn and research in better way. HEC initiative which includes smart universities will enable each student to have access to the high speed internet in each area of the university. Smart class room and safe university project is also in the pipeline.”

Addressing the participants, Minister Zakiya Shahnawaz said, “Use these laptops to show your excellent management skills in the felid of design and to pick up best from yourself as your institution promotes colors, elegances and simplicity.” 

Prof Hina Tayyaba, Vice Chancellor PIFD, in her brief address said, “I thank the government for this initiative which has multifarious positive implications for the educational and particle life of students.” Souvenirs were presented to the chief guest and other guests. 

PhD degrees: Punjab University has awarded two PhD degrees in the subject of Pharmacy. 

Sairah Hafeez Kamran, daughter of Muhammad Hafeez Kamran, has been awarded PhD degree in the subject of Pharmacy (Pharmacology) after approval of her thesis entitled “Pharmacological Screening of Some Indigenous Plants and Elucidation of Biochemical, Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms for Anti-Diabetic Activity” and Misbah Sultana, daughter of Sheikh Muhammad Yaqoob, in the subject of Pharmacy (Pharmaceutics) after approval of her thesis entitled “Rheological and Release Characteristics of Drugs of Different Solubilities from Semisolid Matrix Filled in Hard Gelatin Capsule”. 

GCU debating society: Government College University Debating Society (GCUDS) has bagged 270 national oratory awards during the academic year 2015-16. 

The laurels include 50 coveted team trophies, 9 runners-up trophies, 2 third-position trophies, 93 best speaker awards, 65 second-position awards, 48 third-position and 3 consolation prizes, which were won at various declamation, parliamentary, recitation and poetry competitions at the national level. 

“The speakers of GCUDS have always shown their mettle time and again in English, Urdu and Punjabi languages. This year, however, the society took special initiatives to promote languages like Siraiki and Pashto by introducing internal competition as well as winning national level awards in the respective regional languages,” read the GCUDS academic year 2015-16 report submitted to Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah on Tuesday.

The VC congratulated and commended the young speakers for their active participation and dedication. He applauded their efforts to promote the importance of co-curricular activities in addition to the conventional curriculum and promised to be highly supportive so the society can continue to play a crucial role in shaping intellectual landscape of students.

“The GCUDS outshined every other institute in Pakistan in both declamation and parliamentary style of debate,” GCUDS adviser Siddique Awan told the VC. 

GCUDS President Muhammad Afzan Munir attributed the successful year to the unflinching support and patronage of the VC and their advisers Awan and Prof Dr Haroon Qadir who not only helped arrange state-of-the-art trainings, but also provided funds for the debating trips to represent GCU at the national events.
