Surgical strikes

This refers to the news story, ‘Targets selected in India in case of surgical strike’ (September 23). The war hysteria inside India has almost reached its limits, with its media adding fuel to the fire. The Indian government is said to be treading a dangerous path of hatching strategies to carry out surgical strikes within Pakistan’s territory. Such strikes are conducted at a threshold below full-scale war. India took such action against militants in Myanmar in June, 2015. It now wants to have a swift, covert strike inside Pakistan.

But Pakistan isn’t Myanmar. It is a nuclear-armed nation. A war-mongering chorus was also seen across India after the Mumbai attacks in 2008. At that time as well, India wanted to “teach a lesson” to Pakistan through surgical strikes. A targeted operation could lead to military escalation which could go to any limits. Nobody would know the quantum of the response of the country against which such an operation has been conducted.
