This refers to the article, ‘What education is not’ (August 30) by M Zeb Khan. The writer has truly voiced the lament of umpteen numbers of lecturers and professors across Pakistan by saying ‘stuffing the empty minds of students with more and more information is not education’. The curriculum designed by the Punjab Textbook Board is more a hotchpotch of excerpts grabbed from right and left with the least insight given to the level they are compiled for.
One obvious example is ‘Button, Button’ and ‘Dark They Were’ and ‘Golden-Eyed’, the lessons in the book compiled for first-year students by the PTBB. Every year, I find myself standing on the rostrum with blank faces in front of me. Our textbooks need to undergo a thorough revision in light of reviews by the experts and be made level appropriate.
