Demo against choked sewerage in Multan
From Our Correspondent
MULTAN: Scores of people, including women and children, staged a demonstration against faulty and choked sewerage on Sher Shah Road on Tuesday.
The protesters belonging to Rehman Colony also blocked Sher Shah Road to register their protest. They were chanting slogans against the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa). They warned of staging a sit-in in front of the Wasa Office and the DCO Office if their problems were not addressed. The protesting residents alleged that the Wasa had not laid a proper sewerage in their area. They said: “Sewage has inundated roads, bazaars and streets in the colony, which comprises 400 houses.” They said that the choked sewerage was spreading foul smell in the locality. They alleged that the officials concerned had turned a blind eye to their miseries. They said that there was no let up in miseries of the residents of Rehman Colony for the last several months. The situation had forced them to come on roads to lodge their protest against the Wasa, the protesters added.
A protester, Shahid Joya, said that dozens of complaints had been lodged with the Wasa but to no avail. Farhat Bibi, another protester, said that sewage had entered their houses and started damaging the structures. Villager Arif Riaz said that they had also brought the issue into the notice of councillors but to no avail. Another villager Rozeena Bibi said that they were paying bills to the Wasa regularly but still no relief was being provided to them.
When contacted, Wasa Superintendent Chaudhry Ayub said that Rehman Colony did not fall under the jurisdiction of Wasa and therefore, the agency was not responsible for the disorder.
Wasa Director (Works) Sheikh Muneer Ahmad said that Aslam Dogar had established the colony. He said that he had not paid sewerage cost to Wasa. Therefore, the agency was not responsible for draining out sewage from the colony, he added.
