‘Crackdown on smugglers of human organs soon’
LAHORE
Chairman Standing Committee of National Assembly on Human Rights Babar Nawaz Khan has said that action has been taken against the NGOs working to promote negative image of Pakistan on international level.
He expressed these views while addressing a meeting of standing committee of National Assembly on human rights, in Civil Secretariat, here on Monday. He said the establishment of special courts on human rights was the need of the hour. The government will take every possible step against culprits involved in smuggling of human organs. The federal government will start crackdown on smugglers of human organs soon.
In Punjab, the network of provincial departments of human rights will be expanded. He said the federal government should enhance collaboration with provincial departments for awareness campaign and protection of human rights. The new legislation on human rights will present in national assembly in next session. He said it was our ethical and religious responsibility to protect the basic rights of people.
Constitution of Pakistan and Islam grants protection of human rights to every citizen without any discrimination. The government should adopt a comprehensive policy regarding women and juvenile in all prisons of the country. The situation of human rights in Punjab especially in prisons is better than other provinces.
Federal Secretary of Human Rights Nadeem Ashraf said the federal government with the collaboration of all provinces had devised a national action plan on protection of human rights across the country; the work on establishing special courts was under process.
The regional directorate of Federal Human Rights Department is working to implement and monitor the international treaties on human rights.
Provincial Secretary on Human Rights Asim Iqbal said that provincial task force on human rights would be established soon which would help to implement the federal recommendations at grass root level.
Provincial departments with the coordination of private sector and NGOs are working to protect human rights.
Regional Director Lubna Masood briefed the committee on performance of regional office in Punjab. Members of the committee inquired about the ratio of conviction against the violation of human rights. Committee also directed the authorities concerned to present conviction report within a week.
The committee also examined the implementation on international treaties, GSP Plus Status and implementation of law.
DIG Prisons, DIG Police, Federal Secretary of Human Rights, DG Human Rights, provincial secretary on Minorities and Human Rights, Additional Secretary Home, Secretary NCHR and Regional Director Lubna Masood were present on the occasion. At the end, the meeting was briefed regarding international law on human rights.
