PMDC to recognise new colleges under rules

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) Executive Committee has decided all new medical and dental colleges recommended by the federal government will be recognised strictly in line with the rules and regulations.

PMDC President Dr Shabbir Lehri told 'The News' that around applications had been forwarded by the federal government for the recognition of Watim Dental College, Rawalpindi; Bakhtawar Amin Medical and Dental College, Multan (Dental Section); HITEC Institute of Medical Sciences, Taxila; Rai Institute of Medical Sciences, Sargodha; North West School of Medicine, Peshawar; CMH Kharian Medical College, Kharian; Doctors Medical College, Sargodha; M Islam Medical and Dental College, Gujranwala; Windsor Medical College, Haripur; Loralai Medical College, Loralai Balochistan; Turbat Medical College, Turbat (Kech) Balochistan; Khuzdar Medical College, Khuzdar Balochistan; Rehman College of Dentistry, Peshawar; Nowshehra Medical College, Nowshehra and Gajju Khan Medical College, Swabi.

He said many public and private medical dental colleges had requested for enhancement of annual seats but that request would be considered only after their campuses and attached facilities would be inspected by the PMDC.

The PMDC president said his organisation won't allow admissions by the medical and dental colleges more than the alloted seats and that strict disciplinary action would be initiated against the colleges doing so.

He said Minister of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Sara Afzal Tarar was extending full support and cooperation for the uplifting the PMDC image.

"The minister has promised of her full support to improve the working of PMDC in order to maintain a good relationship of the council with all international medical and dental organisations and stakeholders," he said.

Meanwhile, acting PMDC registrar Dr Syed Azhar Ali Shah said the PMDC council members were striving to uplift the working and functioning of the PMDC.

He said more over 17 cases of medical and dental PhD qualifications had been referred to the PMDC Standing Recognition Committee (Medical) as those programmes were not registered with the PMDC, which was mandatory under the PMDC Ordinance 1962.
