‘No I-Day function at open places’

GUJRANWALA: DCO Muhammad Amir Jan has said that no function regarding the Independence Day would be allowed at open places due to the law and order situation. Presiding over a meeting of the District Intelligence Committee here on Monday, he appealed to the people to cooperate with the district administration to maintain the law and order. He said that no programme should be organised without prior approval of the district administration. The DCO approved 50 Independence Day programmes and directed the officials concerned to provide security to the events.
24 deported arrested from Sialkot airport

GUJRANWALA: The FIA arrested 24 deportees at the Sialkot Airport on Monday. They were deported from Turkey for not having legal documents. They belonged to Sialkot, Gujrat, Gujranwala and Kharian. Later, the FIA produced the deportees before Civil Judge Naghmana Ansar, who sent them to the jail.
Kidnapper gets poetic justice

GUJRANWALA: People foiled an abduction bid and tortured a kidnapper in Sabzi Mandi police limits. Naveed of Chakwal allegedly abducted child Fazil from a street. Seeing the weeping child, people overpowered accused Naveed. They recovered the child from the accused. They also tortured the accused. Later, the accused was handed over to police.
AIOU launches six courses

Islamabad: The Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has launched six short-term courses to promote skill and knowledge-based courses in agriculture sector. The last date for admissions in these courses is September 5.
PIA aircraft skids off runway
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan International Airlines’ Skardu-bound flight on Monday skidded of the runway at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport but no loss to life or property was reported. According to PIA spokesman, a PIA aircraft which was operating as PK-451 developed hydraulics problem due to which the aircraft had to land back at Islamabad Airport. After safe normal landing, the aircraft could not be stopped on the runway and veered off. The aircraft crew members and passengers are safe. All passengers disembarked safely through the normal step. An inquiry into the incident is under way, he added.
Indian parliamentary team to
attend Saarc YPC in Islamabad
NEW DELHI: A three member parliamentary delegation would be travelling to Islamabad to attend the first Saarc Young Parliamentarians Conference (YPC) on Peace and Harmony for Development scheduled to be held from August 16 to 18 in Islamabad. A note by the Lok Sabha Secretariat said that the delegation members would be briefed here on Tuesday but the names of the delegates are not known yet, Indian media reported. The YPC intends to offer young parliamentarians narrative as a prelude to the 19th Saarc Summit that Pakistan will be hosting in November.
Lok Virsa pays tribute to Shamim Ara
Islamabad: Executive Director of Lok Virsa Dr. Fouzia Saeed on Monday paid tributes to film actress director and producer Shamim Ara who passed away in London on August 5 after prolonged illness. Shamim Ara, as a pillar of film trade, was a major film artist and courageous woman, who stood behind the film trade for over 40 years, Fouzia Saeed said in a statement here.
She said that Shamim Ara’s performance in films as an actress, then producer and finally as producer, director made significant contributions to the film industry in the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties. She noted that Shamim Ara must also be credited for introducing many new faces who later became bankable names on movie marquee. Shamim Ara won the National Film Award and Lifetime Achievement. Her notable films as actress include ‘Saheli,’ ‘Saiqa,’ ‘Naila,’ ‘Salgirah,’ ‘Chingari,’ ‘Lakhon Mein Eik,’ ‘Aag Ka Darya’ and ‘Farangi.’
Girl commits, two attempt suicide in Faisalabad

FAISALABAD: A girl committed and two others attempted suicide in different incidents here. Nagina Anwar of Chak 215/RB, Malkhanwala, committed suicide by swallowing poisonous pills over a domestic dispute. Meanwhile, Adeel Imdad of Mansoorabad and a girl of Ghareebabad attempted suicide by swallowing poisonous pills over domestic problems. They were under treatment in a hospital.
Urdu university expands bus fleet

Islamabad: The Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology has added a new bus to its five-strong fleet.According to FUUAST, Islamabad Campus additional registrar Shah Jee Muhammad, the expansion of the bus fleet will facilitate students and staff members in commuting between the university and their respective residential areas.
Heavy rain hits Faislabad

FAISALABAD: Heavy rain lashed the city and adjoining areas on Monday morning. The downpour started at 7am and continued for an hour, turning the low-lying areas into rivulets. Power supply also went off during the rain and could not be restored in some areas till the filing of the report.
