The Karachi Development Authority has decided to start checking attendance of its officers to deal with absenteeism.

The spokesman for the authority said on Tuesday that attendance of executive engineers, assistant engineers and sub engineers would be verified in the attendance register from Thursday.

He said all officers had been told to be present in the seminar hall of Civic Centre at 10am with their office cards and original computerised national identity cards. Replying to a question, he said the decision had been taken because a large number of employees were absent from duty.

He said those found absent would be issued with a show-cause notice, and after that their names would be published in newspapers. In case such employees did not show up at their workplace, their jobs would be terminated.

A committee, headed by the KDA secretary and comprising as members the director finance, the superintending engineer and the director administration and engineering, has been constituted to supervise the process.

The KDA has also started cleaning up Civic Centre, which is in a deplorable condition.

The spokesman said another meeting on the sharing of resources by the KDA and the KMC would be held on Thursday.  KMC officers have expressed their serious reservations, saying that they are being humiliated not by KDA but its labour union.

The officers said they were subjected to checking and even Grade 19 officers were subjected to checking by security guards.
