Where’s the threat?
This refers to the article ‘Populist authoritarianism vs Bonapartism’ (July 21) by Imtiaz Alam. The writer has comprehensively dilated upon the factors responsible for the failure of the attempted military coup in Turkey. The DNA of the Turkish and Pakistani armies is not similar in any respect. The Turkish Army has been supporting the secular philosophy of Kamal Ataturk, and their military coups in the past had to do more with ideological differences.
In Pakistan, democracy is threatened more by the political parties than the military. The sit-ins and street protests announced by the opposition parties will not ensure the return of money transferred offshore. Even if fresh elections are held, the same parties will win again. We can only pray for political stability in Pakistan in the coming years.
