Paediatrician and public health expert Dr Zulfiqar A. Bhutta has been awarded the prestigious Virchow Prize 2025 for his groundbreaking work in maternal, newborn, and child health, particularly in underserved and crisis-affected regions of South Asia and Africa.

Announced by the Virchow Foundation in Berlin, the award celebrates Dr Bhutta’s lifelong commitment to evidence-based, community-embedded solutions that have transformed global policies and frameworks in child survival and maternal care.

He shares the award with South African epidemiologist Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim, honoured for her pioneering work in HIV prevention among women in Africa.
