Swat tragedy
At least 12 tourists tragically lost their lives after being caught in a flash flood along the Swat River on Friday (June 27). Reports indicate that most of the victims were part of a single family who had gathered for breakfast by the river and were unable to escape as the water level surged unexpectedly due to heavy monsoon rains upstream.
This incident serves as a crucial reminder that vacationing must be approached with caution, particularly during unpredictable weather conditions. It is important to stay away from riversides during the monsoon season, adhere to government safety advisories and promote responsible tourism practices.

The Swat tragedy that lead to the deaths of at least 12 tourists on Friday (June 27), showed the inability of our administrative machinery to take action in a timely manner. Despite repeated seasonal flooding in the region, no effective preventive measures appeared to be in place – at least not effective ones. Swat Valley attracts thousands of tourists annually and contributes significantly to national revenue.
Yet, emergency preparedness remains dismal. A few boats stationed near a 240-kilometre-long river are no match for sudden flash floods. In such conditions, even boats become unusable. Helicopter access and well-equipped emergency camps could save many lives. It is time we stop reacting only after disasters strike and must shift towards taking proactive meausres to avert such tragedies. A life saved is worth far more than any recovery effort made too late.
