Port Qasim cuts charges by 50% for exporters
KARACHI: The Port Qasim Authority (PQA) has announced a 50 per cent reduction in port charges for exporters, in line with the government’s reform agenda aimed at enhancing trade and driving economic growth.
The announcement was made during a strategic roadmap meeting of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, chaired by Federal Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry on Monday.Addressing the meeting, Chaudhry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting local entrepreneurs and boosting domestic trade through the development of ports and fisheries.
He noted that the reform agenda in the maritime sector -- including the reduction of port charges at Port Qasim -- demonstrates the government’s resolve to facilitate business, promote trade, and foster economic progress in coastal regions.
The minister also announced plans to establish an aquaculture industrial zone to stimulate commercial activity in the marine and aquaculture sectors.In addition, Pakistan’s first-ever marine and aquaculture policy is expected to be introduced soon. The policy will offer a comprehensive framework for the sustainable development of marine resources and aquaculture.
The meeting also reported notable achievements by the marine fisheries department, which has met its annual export target of $410 million through fisheries and aquaculture exports. Meanwhile, the ship recycling industry has generated Rs6 billion in revenue.
Chaudhry stressed the importance of aligning with global green shipping initiatives to minimise environmental impact and promote sustainable maritime practices.He further highlighted the government’s focus on modernising port infrastructure, streamlining customs processes and cultivating a business-friendly environment to improve the country’s competitiveness in global trade.The Ministry of Maritime Affairs, he added, is actively pursuing reforms to unlock the economic potential of the country’s extensive coastline and maritime resources.
