Following the recent jailbreak at District Jail Malir, the number of escapees who have been re-arrested or who have surrendered has reached 172, while 53 inmates are still at large.
According to jail officials, a total of 225 prisoners had escaped from Malir Jail on the night of June 3 amid a riot triggered during an alleged earthquake scare. Since then, many fugitives have been brought back either through police raids or by their families voluntarily surrendering them.
On Thursday, Steel Town Police arrested one of the escapees, Jan Muhammad, and returned him to Malir Jail. In a recorded video statement, the prisoner said, "When the earthquake struck on June 3, I fled with the others out of panic."
