The true spirit of Eid is to reach out to the less privileged and sharing the joy with them. Keeping this in mind, a group of children from Islamabad decided to empty their cupboards brimming with toys and share it with those children who are not so lucky to have toys or even be at home with their loved ones.

The idea started primarily by the mother of one of the children who planned to teach her children the significance of sharing by giving. She wanted them to realize that they are blessed with so many toys, and to think of those who don’t even have one toy to play with.

She asked her children to take out all those toys that were in good condition and gently used to donate to children less privileged.

“Every time my son would hold his favourite toy saying he could not part with it, I reminded him of another little boy who is not so lucky to have even one toy and how by giving, it would bring the other boy joy,” Nazish Abbas, the mastermind behind the idea said.

The word rapidly spread around and other children started bringing in boxes full of their toys to donate. The enthusiastic kids of age’s nine to twelve donated everything from their remote control cars, helicopters, dolls to huge stuff toys. Another mother brought in a carton of juice boxes and biscuits to add with the toys. All the children sat down to make the goodie bags and made decorative EID MUBARAK tags to put on each bag.

After a lot of inspection, the group decided to visit the children ward in PIMS hospital and give the toys to the patients who are not able to get out of the hospital on Eid. “It makes me really happy to be giving these toys to children who are bed ridden and cannot go home on Eid. Now at least they will have something to play with because they deserve to have fun too,” one of the young volunteers said.

“It is very important for our children to learn the lesson of giving and sharing and not feeling above any other child just because they may have more material stuff than others,” commented a mom.

So is Eid only about boasting the latest fashions and devouring chicken? As these kids clearly show us, it is much bigger than that, it is a day to share your happiness and joy with those who cannot enjoy the leisure of life that we take for granted.
