A man who allegedly murdered his wife and son before attempting to take his own life died in police custody on Friday.
The incident occurred on June 4 in Surjani Town’s Yousuf Goth near Kareemi Chowrangi, where 45-year-old Faisal, son of Sagheeruddin, reportedly killed his 35-year-old wife Sana by slitting her throat and poisoned their 10-year-old son Ali.
After the murders, Faisal tried to commit suicide by cutting his own throat and was critically injured. Faisal was initially taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi for treatment. However, according to Surjani SHO Ali Shah, the hospital later discharged him, stating the patient was stable and the bed had been allocated to another patient.
Due to Faisal’s critical condition and medical needs, the investigating officer was advised by the SHO to take him to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) and had him referred to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), as proper care — particularly oxygen support through his tracheal tube — could not be provided in a police lockup. However, the ASH reportedly refused to admit Faisal or issue a referral to the JPMC.
The officer then brought Faisal back to the police station. According to SHO, his family also declined to admit him to a private hospital. Faisal’s condition deteriorated during the night, and he died in custody between Thursday and Friday. Sana was the mother of three children.
The two surviving daughters, Aymal and Bareera, were unharmed and were taken into protective custody by neighbours before being handed over to their paternal uncle. The police was continuing their investigation into the case, including the circumstances surrounding Faisal’s death in custody.
