Invigilation noise

One factor that has, unfortunately, become normalised in examination rooms is invigilation misconduct. This behaviour not only agitates students but also increases their anxiety. As a tutor, I have received numerous complaints from students who say ‘I know everything, but I am unable to articulate my thoughts because our invigilator was talking too much’. Despite the seriousness of this issue, it has never been adequately addressed. Many so-called invigilators act as if they are the busiest people in the examination hall. They repeatedly call students to take extra sheets, forgetting their primary duty to provide these materials at the students’ seats. Some invigilators even eat their breakfast in the exam room, which is highly unprofessional.

When the examination hall is large, two or three invigilators are appointed and the room becomes a place where they talk endlessly about their personal lives. What is the point of that? Such unprofessional behaviour negatively impacts students’ performance. The education authorities must choose invigilators wisely. Their selection should prioritise emotional intelligence as a key trait. Since students are particularly sensitive during exams, invigilators must demonstrate kindness, genuineness and calmness to help students remain composed under pressure.
