LAHORE:A grim picture of public safety emerged over the Eid holidays (June 6–8) in Punjab, as at least 773 people lost their lives in various emergencies, according to data released by Rescue 1122.
The figures include 587 deaths due to medical emergencies, 39 fatalities in 5,374 road accidents, 19 deaths in crime-related incidents, 10 due to drowning, eight from electric shocks, and 110 from miscellaneous emergencies across the province.
The Secretary Emergency Services expressed concern over the high number of road accident fatalities, especially noting the scale of traffic incidents that occurred during the festive period. He emphasised the need for stricter road safety measures and public awareness. Despite the tragic toll, the secretary lauded the dedication of Rescue 1122 personnel who remained on duty throughout Eid to serve the people of Punjab.
18 arrested during search operations
Punjab Police conducted 248 combing operations over the past 24 hours, checking 7,392 suspects and taking 18 suspicious individuals into custody. According to a police spokesperson, 27 search and sweep operations were also carried out, leading to the questioning of 2,261 individuals and the arrest of one suspect.
In targeted actions, the police apprehended 71 proclaimed offenders, 12 court absconders, and two habitual criminals, recovering a significant cache of illegal weapons and ammunition.
Body recovered from canal
Body of an unidentified man was recovered from the canal along Harbanspura Canal Road, on Sunday. The Rescue 1122 diving team responded promptly to the emergency and successfully retrieved the body from the water. Details regarding the circumstances of the incident remain unclear, and authorities have not yet determined the cause of death. Body was handed over to the police.
Meanwhile, body of a child was recovered from the canal near Eden Canal Villas along Canal Road, on Sunday. Rescue 1122 emergency teams, including divers and emergency vehicles, were dispatched to the scene following reports of a body spotted in the water. The diving unit worked diligently to recover the child’s body from the canal. After the successful retrieval, the body was handed over to the police. The identity of the child and the circumstances leading to the incident remain unknown, so far.
