MINGORA: The Swat Hotel Association has called on the federal government to formally recognise the tourism sector in Swat as an industry.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Swat Press Club, the association president, Zahid Khan and other office-bearers, including Javed Ali Shah, Sarwar Khan and Taj Khan, emphasized the urgent need for institutional support to strengthen tourism and the local economy.

“Swat is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in the country, which attracts millions of local and international visitors each year,” said Zahid Khan. “Despite this, the hospitality sector is facing serious challenges due to the government’s lack of attention,” he added. The association demanded that hotel businesses be granted the status of industry to ensure they receive necessary financial, administrative, and legal support.

The office-bearers of the association also highlighted the poor condition of the main road from Landaki to Kalam, which, they said, created difficulties for both tourists and residents. They urged authorities to begin immediate repair and reconstruction of this critical route.

The speakers also expressed concern over the lack of internet connectivity in Kalam. “The absence of internet services creates major problems for tourists and hotel operators alike,” said Zahid Khan.

Criticizing the role of the Swat Development Authority (SDA), the association alleged that the organisation was involved in unlawful practices and harassment under the guise of anti-encroachment drives. “Local hotel owners are being unfairly targeted with notices accusing them of polluting the Swat River, which is far from the truth,” Zahid Khan stated.
