Islamabad: The International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) has geared up to play its role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Dr. Hassan Shehzad, from the Department of Mass Communication and Media Studies, has said that that IIUI President Dr. Ahmed Shuja Syed has worked as an engine to steer the university in this direction.

He said that Dr. Shuja has told the faculty that they need to pull together to move the university in the realm of relevance as far as the global urge to find solutions is concerned. He said the university has recently arranged a seminar titled ‘Research with Purpose: Aligning University Research with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).’

A Working Group to direct research to achieve SDGs has been formed but much more is still left to be desired, said Dr. Shehzad. “It is very unfortunate that so many big names abused this esteemed seat of learning for personal gains. Now they themselves have succeed in holding higher offices at different universities and institutions but the IIUI, which gave refuge to them in their hour of need, gets nothing in return,” he said.

He said that 60 per cent of the planet is composed of water and appreciated the fact that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has designed a new maritime policy. He said, “Maritime sector alone can offer Pakistan at least $100 billion if we succeed in utilizing only 10 percent of its potential.”
