GB puts hospitals, administrative units on high alert amid security concerns

GILGIT: Authorities in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Wednesday activated emergency protocols and placed all hospitals and administrative units on high alert following security concerns linked to recent airspace violations by the Indian Air Force.

The measures were announced during a high-level emergency preparedness meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Abrar Mirza, where officials reviewed the region’s readiness to respond to any potential crisis.

Senior officials from key departments — including provincial secretaries, divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, and the Director General of the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) — attended the meeting. The Home Secretary delivered a detailed briefing on the possible threats arising from heightened regional tensions.

As part of the emergency response plan, the Health Department will ensure that all public hospitals remain fully operational, with medical staff including doctors, nurses, and paramedics placed on high alert. All staff leaves have been suspended, and a region-wide blood donation campaign is being launched to maintain sufficient reserves.

Administrative officials across the region have been instructed to ensure that government machinery remains fully functional. Commissioners and deputy commissioners were told to stay in constant communication with local communities, particularly those in border areas, and to keep residents informed about developments.

The meeting also addressed logistical preparedness. The Home and Excise departments have been tasked with inspecting fuel depots to ensure the uninterrupted availability of petroleum products. Additionally, a review of food and grain reserves has been ordered to pre-empt any potential shortages.

Communications infrastructure is to be maintained without disruption, and coordination mechanisms across departments are being strengthened to respond quickly to emergencies.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to public safety, Chief Secretary Wani said, “The government of Gilgit-Baltistan is fully prepared to respond to any emergency. All available resources will be mobilised to protect the lives and wellbeing of the people. Their safety remains our top priority.”
