Loadshedding in the heat
Karachi’s residents are once again battling unbearable electricity loadshedding that continues to disrupt daily life across the city. Despite paying hefty electricity bills, citizens are forced to endure unannounced outages ranging from six to twelve hours a day. The situation has become especially difficult during peak summer temperatures, with families struggling to sleep at night, students unable to study and businesses incurring heavy losses. In many low-income neighbourhoods, the power outages are even longer and more frequent, highlighting a troubling disparity.
Adding to the frustration is the lack of transparency and accountability from K-Electric. While official statements claim ‘maintenance’ and ‘shortages’, there is little evidence of lasting solutions or infrastructure upgrades. Reliable electricity is not a luxury but a basic need. I urge the authorities and K-Electric to address this crisis with urgency, ensure fair distribution of power and invest in long-term energy solutions like solar and wind.
