ISLAMABAD: Pakistan briefed Bangladesh about ongoing tensions between Pakistan and India on Monday in Dhaka. The briefing is viewed as important since Bangladesh is the first South Asian country to which the envoy has provided such a briefing.

Pakistan High Commissioner to Bangladesh Syed Ahmed Maroof met Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Muhammad Jashim Uddinin Dhaka. The diplomatic sources told The News/Jang Monday that High Commissioner Maroof informed the foreign secretary that Pakistan has offered an international inquiry through neutral experts of the Pehalgam incident. Islamabad has also suggested a similar inquiry into the Jafar Express hijacking of last month and the killing of innocent passengers by the terrorists who had foreign links. The Pakistan high commissioner made it clear that Pehalgam was a false flag operation executed by the Indian authorities. He told the BD foreign secretary that, disregarding international laws, India has held the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) under abeyance.

The press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the high commissioner briefed the foreign secretary on regional matters. He also informed the foreign secretary about the ongoing visit of a high-level Pakistani business delegation to Bangladesh and the Bangladesh-Pakistan Business Forum held in Dhaka. Both sides expressed hope that the visit of Pakistan’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister to Bangladesh will take place at a mutually convenient time. Notably, the scheduled visit of the foreign minister to Dhaka in April was postponed on Thursday, amid rising tensions between Pakistan and India.

The BD foreign secretary expressed satisfaction over the constructive discussions and the successful conclusion of the sixth round of bilateral consultations between Bangladesh and Pakistan, held on April 17 in Dhaka. He described it as a positive step toward strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Emphasis was placed on the importance of continuous follow-up and further work by the relevant authorities on the areas and issues discussed during the bilateral consultations at the foreign secretary level.

According to diplomatic sources, Bangladesh High Commissioner to Pakistan, Muhammad Iqbal Hossain Khan, also sent a despatch to his government on the Indian provocations, based on the briefing of Foreign Secretary Ms Amna Baloch to the envoys posted in Islamabad.
