This refers to the letter ‘Remittances utilisation’ (April 18, 2025) by Abbas R Siddiqi. The writer has rightly suggested that the record $4.1 billion in remittances should be used to pay back our costly loans. His suggestion to reduce our dependence on imports to encourage local manufacturing is also logical and important.
However, I would also add that covering or reducing the cost of bureaucratic and political perks and allowances is equally important for improving the economy.
