The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) has invited proposals to expand the scope of waste recycling operations at its Hariyali Hub recycling plants, located at the Baldia and Sharafi GTS sites.

The decision to scale up these operations was made during a meeting chaired by SSWMB Managing Director Tariq Ali Nizamani on Friday. Currently, recycling activities were being conducted as part of a pilot project at the Hariyali Hub facilities in both zones. However, the board was now strategising to upscale these efforts to improve waste management throughout the city. As part of this initiative, women-led company Tricycle Pvt Ltd had submitted its proposal for the Baldia GTS Hariyali Hub Recycling Plant, while Imperial Venture Company had put forward its proposal for the Sharafi GTS Hariyali Hub.

During the meeting, Nizamani emphasised the importance of reducing waste and converting usable waste into valuable products. “We are taking concrete steps to reduce waste and convert usable waste into valuable products across Karachi and Sindh. Apart from expanding the scope of the existing pilot project, efforts are underway to modernize all GTS facilities and implement sustainable recycling solutions,” he said.

Nizamani also stressed the need for developing sustainable models for all projects to ensure not only a pollution-free and healthy environment for citizens but also financial self-sufficiency for the institution. He directed both companies to revise their proposals, ensuring they included comprehensive details such as the volume of waste to be recycled, its market value, the type of sustainable model to be adopted, and a clear list of end products to be produced from the recycled materials. All proposals would be reviewed and approved by a steering committee before implementation.
