LAHORE:The first electronic limb was implanted to a female disabled patient, which gives hope to the disabled patients in Pakistan.
While addressing a press conference, former head of Rehabilitation Centre for the Disabled, Mayo Hospital, Lahore, and Chairman HOPE Rehabilitation Centre Dr Khalid Niaz Niazi, along with orthopedic surgeons Dr Nauman, Dr Sohail Niazi and Dr Aftab, said that the maiden artificial electronic leg was implanted upon a 34-year-old female patient from Hyderabad, Sindh, whose leg had been amputated due to cancer 21 years ago. Dr Khalid Niazi said the patient will now be able to climb stairs, walk, run, ride bicycle or even drive a car.
Previously, the patients had to go to the United States, UK, Europe or India for implantation of electronic limbs, which also cost them heavily. Besides, they also faced difficulties in maintainability of those limbs. Now, the facility will be available in Lahore.
