Bangladesh grab resounding victory over Thailand

LAHORE: Bangladesh opened their ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2025 campaign with an exceptional performance, securing a dominant 178-run victory over Thailand at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground here on Thursday.

Led by skipper Nigar Sultana Joty’s maiden century and outstanding bowling displays from Fahima Khatun and Jannatul Ferdus, Bangladesh demonstrated their strength early in the tournament.

Electing to field after winning the toss, Thailand made an encouraging start as Phannita Maya dismissed Ishma Tanjim in the fourth over. However, Bangladesh quickly regained control with a solid 104-run partnership between Sharmin Akhter and Fargana Hoque. Hoque contributed a steady 53 from 82 deliveries before being dismissed by Onnicha Kamchomphu.

The innings reached new heights as Akhter found a reliable partner in captain Nigar Sultana Joty. Together, they produced a spectacular 152-run partnership that powered Bangladesh to a commanding total of 271. Sultana’s knock of 101 off 80 balls marked her first-ever ODI century, showcasing her leadership and batting prowess. Akhter played a crucial anchoring role, remaining unbeaten on 94 off 126 balls.

Thailand began their chase with composure, but their hopes of a competitive match were dashed as Fahima Khatun struck to remove Chanida Sutthiruang. The wickets began to tumble soon after, with Jannatul Ferdus dismantling the middle order. Both Khatun and Ferdus claimed five wickets each, leaving Thailand reeling at 93 all out. Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling attack ensured there was no room for recovery, sealing the win in convincing fashion.

Bangladesh’s emphatic victory takes them to the top of the table with two points and an impressive net run rate of +3.560. This win positions them as strong contenders to secure one of the two coveted spots in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup later this year in India.

Their next match will be against Ireland Women in a day-night clash on Sunday, April 13, at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Thailand, meanwhile, will aim to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming fixture.
