E-governance to the rescue
The patronage system plays a central role in the country, where political interference in bureaucratic appointments and decision-making is common, disrupting the efficiency of governance. This system undermines merit-based selection and social hierarchies and nepotism exacerbate this issue by limiting the opportunities for qualified individuals to rise within the bureaucracy. As a result, the professionalism and efficiency of the civil service are reduced, hindering the country’s ability to address pressing governance challenges.
In recent years, technology has emerged as a potential solution to these challenges. E-governance and e-administration have the capacity to enhance transparency, accountability and efficiency in public administration. By reducing human interaction and ensuring digital records, technology limits the scope for corruption and streamlines administrative processes, which reduces delays and inefficiencies. Data-driven decision-making can also help identify inefficiencies and uncover patterns of corruption.
