PESHAWAR: The teaching staff and students of the Peshawar Public School and College on Saturday launched an annual tree plantation campaign by planting saplings on the lawn of the institution.
Inaugurating the tree plantation, Prof Iftikhar Ahmad Khan, head of the institution, urged the students to promote the cause of ‘save plant, save life’ to counter the hazards of climate disasters and make sure a clean and green environment.
The Students Society for Clean and Green Environment (SSCGE) of PPS&C had made all arrangements for the tree plantation.
Young students were sensitised on hazards of climate change and asked to become part of the noble cause for humanity as planting a tree was considered as the endless charity towards contributing to sustaining the environment.
Prof Iftikhar said that trees helped regulate the climate by providing habitat and food for various wildlife species and supporting biodiversity while trees also lend beauty and character to the landscapes, enhancing their visual aesthetics.
Over 2500 saplings were planted on both campuses boys and girls wings where all the students contributed to the campaign of save the plant save the life, several brought a sapling others donated cash for buying saplings from city nurseries and team members of the students society pledged to take care of the newly-planted saplings till they grew into big trees.
Prof Shah Abid, president of SSCGE vowed that he and his team would try their best to achieve the goal of planting over 5000 trees on the campuses alongside a full-fledged ‘Botanical Garden’ inside the college campus.
Suhrab Khan, chief of students tree plantation campaign said young students should come forward to advance the cause of saving the environment for posterity saying young people could reap more benefits of trees in their future life through planting saplings.
Vice -head, Prof Mukhiar Ali, Senior faculty members and directors of studies also spoke at the ceremony.
Later, active students were distributed commendation certificates for their active participation in the tree plantation drive.
