The Karachi Fish Harbour Authority and Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for garbage collection and disposal from the Fisheries Harbour area.

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced that 10,000 to 12,000 tonnes of garbage was collected daily from Karachi and transported to landfill sites. He remarked that piles of waste had been present in various parts of the city when he assumed his office, and millions of tons of garbage had been removed since then, significantly improving the cleanliness situation in the provincial capital.

Speaking at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) head office on Friday, he highlighted a new agreement under which the SSWMB would now be responsible for garbage collection from the Fisheries Harbour area. Calling it a positive step, he said this collaboration would further enhance cleanliness at the harbour.

SSWMB Managing Director Tariq Nizamani and Karachi Fish Harbour Authority Managing Director Zahid Khemtio signed the MoU. The event was attended by SSWMB Executive Director of Operations Ghulam Abbas Memon, Fish Harbour Authority Director of Engineering Shanid Ahmed, Director of Coordination Ikhlaq Yousafzai and other officials.

Under the agreement, the SSWMB would collect waste daily from the five-kilometre radius of the fish harbour. However, removing trash from the water and transporting it to designated collection points would be the responsibility of the harbour authority.

The agreement, initially for one year, may be extended based on performance and need. Wahab said further improvements in Karachi’s sanitation would be seen in the coming days, with full cooperation extended to the harbour authority.

He instructed the SSWMB officials to maintain special cleanliness measures across all districts and continue daily waste collection efforts, ensuring that not just main roads but also suburban areas remained clean.

He emphasised that Karachi was undergoing a transformation under the Pakistan Peoples Party’s vision. The KMC was not only completing ongoing development projects but also launching new ones, he said, adding that the KMC was now financially stable with sufficient funds available to ensure timely completion of all development initiatives.
