All to blame

Almost every day, we hear tragic news of fatal accidents in Karachi, resulting in the loss of innocent lives. Unfortunately, this issue is not new for the city. If we look back at history, similar incidents have occurred time and again, yet little has been done to address the root causes. According to a 2023 report, Karachi witnessed around 1,400 road accidents in a single year. Since the 1980s, the number of accidents has been steadily rising, raising serious questions about road safety measures. Who is responsible for this crisis? Is it the reckless drivers who ignore traffic rules, indulge in over-speeding, and fail to wear helmets? Or is it the authorities who neglect road maintenance, leaving behind broken and hazardous roads? The reality is that both play a role in this growing catastrophe.

The lack of strict law enforcement, poor road infrastructure, and public negligence collectively contribute to these tragic incidents. It is high time that the government takes immediate action to improve road conditions, enforce traffic laws more strictly, and launch awareness campaigns about road safety. Stricter penalties for traffic violations, regular road maintenance, and improved public transport facilities are essential steps toward reducing these accidents. Citizens, too, must act responsibly by following traffic rules and prioritising safety on the roads.
