Real development
This letter refers to the news story ‘Pakistan’s economic crossroads: reform or ruin?’ (February 27, 2025, Business) by Mansoor Ahmad. The writer describes the time required for recovery after IMF bailouts in Sri Lanka, Argentina, Egypt and Greece and states that, in the case of Pakistan, “a resurgence in investment and growth is expected between 2026 and 2028, but long term recovery hinges on Pakistan’s ability to attract foreign investment, boost exports and stabilise industries”. In my opinion, these are the effects and not the causes of development. The latter depends upon the proper use of available resources and knowledge and the ability to produce goods and services. Our problem is lack of knowledge and ability to produce anything better than others.
With nearly half the children of school going age out of school, and those in school subject to an outdated curriculum, one cannot expect to improve productivity and increase production and exports. Our political leaders, despite being educated in the elite institutions of the country, lack a basic understanding of economic development. They regard motorways and metros, under passes and overheads, as economic development. Education of children and improving the knowledge and ability of the labour force do not appear to be on anybody’s ‘to-do list’.
