Three sisters crushed to death in Gilgit
Victims, aged 10, 12, and 15, were walking to school when a speeding Prado struck them
GILGIT: A tragic accident occurred on Thursday morning in Baseen Khari, a suburban area of Gilgit, where a speeding vehicle ran over three sisters, killing them on the spot.
“They were in school uniform and heading to their school when it happened,” said a witness. Another girl accompanying them sustained injuries and was shifted to a hospital.
According to police, the accident took place near the Baseen Police Station on the main highway connecting Gilgit to Ghizer district. The victims, aged 10, 12, and 15, were walking to school when a speeding Prado struck them.
“The Prado was carrying other schoolchildren, who remained unharmed,” SDPO Murtaza Shah told media. The driver was arrested, but the accident sparked outrage among locals, who set the vehicle on fire in protest.
Gilgit Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Zahoor Ahmed confirmed that the Prado, which was transporting schoolgirls, ran over the victims on the Gilgit-Ghizer Highway.
Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss and extended condolences to the grieving family. He has ordered an immediate and transparent investigation into the incident. This accident highlights the urgent need for stricter traffic regulations, better driver training, and enhanced pedestrian safety measures in Gilgit-Baltistan.
