Revenue puzzle

This letter refers to the news report ‘Pakistan’s inability to generate revenues key issue: IMF’ (February 21, 2025). One of the key steps to solving this problem is to broaden the tax base. Right now, the country relies too much on indirect taxes, which can hurt ordinary people.

Investing in renewable energy sources like wind and solar power is also crucial to reduce the dependence on imported fuel. Improving governance is another priority. The government should also focus on getting more businesses to pay taxes and move out of the informal economy.
