Winter market displays various facets of German culture
The German Consulate General in Karachi brought a German-style winter market for the people of the city at an event organised at the consulate on Sunday.
More than 60 stalls at the market displayed various facets of German culture. There were stalls from the German Culture Centre and the Goethe-Institut. Some stalls were also arranged by the culture departments of Sindh and Balochistan.
There were also stalls offering German food. Prominent stalls included two from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working for children with Down syndrome, and several other stalls of NGOs working for women in the country.
Speaking to the media, German Consul General in Karachi Dr Rüdiger Lotz said the winter market has become quite a yearly tradition in the city. “We have done this for some decades by now.”
Dr Lotz said that such markets are established in German cities such as Munich and Cologne, and they wanted to replicate them. He said people go there for food and to buy presents, clothes, handicrafts and other products. He also said the market is always a big success in Karachi, as people throng to the festival. He added that the festival brings food, handicrafts, music and arts together, and that the consulate is glad people attended and enjoyed the festival.
There was also a concert by the music band Khudgharz. The CG said the event is open to the general public so they can enjoy nice German food, and enjoy songs by Khudgharz. A large number of people visited different stalls and enjoyed German delicacies. One of the visitors, Hunain, said he was glad he attended the festival and got a chance to see German culture.
