‘Illegal waste dumping by unregistered factories harming KIA’
Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) Managing Director Tariq Ali Nizamani has criticised unregistered factories for dumping waste in open areas, as this practice disrupts cleaning operations and creates environmental hazards in the Korangi Industrial Area (KIA).
Nizamani made these remarks during a meeting at the Korangi Association of Trade & Industry’s (KATI) office, where he recalled that in the previous meeting, the authorities had decided to categorise factories based on their size, workforce and waste production to ensure a transparent billing system.
He said the SSWMB had introduced a website portal to streamline the process, yet many companies remain reluctant to register or pay their bills regularly.
He announced that in the new tender for District East, the SSWMB is considering introducing a two-bin waste disposal system, which would require extensive awareness campaigns.
Urging KATI members to play their role, he requested them to raise awareness in the KIA so that companies hand over waste to solid waste personnel instead of dumping it outside, and make timely payments for service charges.
The meeting agreed to appoint focal persons to resolve billing issues and streamline payments. Nizamani assured that the SSWMB would establish a structured system for bill distribution, and take action against those who violate waste disposal regulations.
“With the cooperation of KATI members, we can maintain cleanliness in industrial areas, and reduce environmental pollution. A healthy society begins with cleanliness, and proper waste disposal — whether household or industrial — is essential.”
KATI President Junaid Naqi acknowledged the challenges in bill payments, saying that when companies register after discussions with KATI, they often receive bills that include previous dues, discouraging them from making payments. He suggested issuing current month’s bills first to ensure all companies register without delays in payments.
Appreciating the SSWMB’s efforts, Naqi noted that the organisation always cooperates beyond routine cleaning, whether clearing construction debris, removing waste from drainage channels or assisting in rainwater drainage.
KATI members also highlighted other concerns, and expressed high expectations from the SSWMB, and also assured KATI’s full support for improving waste management in the area. At the end of the meeting, Naqi presented a shield and a bouquet to Nizamani as a token of appreciation.
